Fazio’s Meatballs Recalled for Possible Listeria

P.E. & F. Inc. of St. Louis is recalling about 123 pounds of frozen, ready-to-eat meatballs because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. There have been no reports of illness associated with the consumption of this product, but Listeria infections can take up to 70 days to manifest.

Fazio’s meatballs are sold in 15 ounce packages. Each package has a lot code of “041114” and has the establishment number “EST. 13051” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products were made on April 11, 2013, and sold at retail locations in the St. Louis area.

The problem was discovered by routine FSIS sampling. The company inadvertently did not hold the product pending test results. Listeria monocytogenes can cause high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, and nausea. Pregnant women may experience mild symptoms but can suffer miscarriage and stillbirth if they contract listeriosis.  If you purchased these meatballs, do not eat them.
