GoldCoast Salads Recalls Fresh Crab Spread for Possible Listeria

CrabGoldCoast Salads is recalling their Fresh Crab Spread because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. To date, there are no reports of illness associated with the consumption of this product.

The product is Cold Coast Fresh Crab Spread sold in 8 ounce containers. The UPC number is 83355500325, with an expiration date of 1/31/2013. The Spread was sold at Giant’s, Martin’s, Stop & Shop, and may have been sold to other retailers.

Any ready-to-eat food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes is considered adulterated and is illegal to sell. The bacteria can cause a flu-like illness, with symptoms such as upset stomach, diarrhea, fever, muscle aches, stiff neck, headache, loss of balance, and convulsions. Pregnant women with listeriosis usually only have mild symptoms, but the bacteria can cause miscarriage and stillbirth. The bacteria kills about 500 Americans each year.
