Recall: Even Marshmallow Eggs Get Salmonella

Update March 3: This recall has been canceled. Further testing has shown that the candy is free of Salmonella.

Zachary Confections, Inc. is recalling certain production lots of its Zachary Chocolate Covered Marshmallow Eggs for possible contamination with Salmonella. To date, there have bene no illnesses associated with the recalled product.

marshmallow-salmonella-eggsThe problem was discovered during routine testing performed by the company. A test on a finished product indicated the potential for Salmonella contamination. The company is recalling all lots of product that may have been affected.

The products under recall are packaged in white egg crates with purple, green and yellow lettering. The specific Case UPC number is 1 00 75186 31797 3, the Unit UPC number is 0 75186 15797 8, the Code Dates are D3245D;
D3145E; and F3145E; D3245. And the Best By Date is 2/14/14. No other Zachary Confections products are involved in this recall.

The recalled product was manufactured on February 20 and February 21, 2013, and shipped from the facility on February 21 and February 22, 2013. The recalled products were distributed to retail stores  in  Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Zachary Confections has suspended production of the product while it cooperates with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on an investigation into the source of the problem.

Salmonella can cause serious illness. Those most ata risk are children, seniors, pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems. Symptoms of a Salmonella infection, called salmonellosis  include fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea which may be bloody. In some cases,  the infection can spread into the bloodstream causing severe illnesses such as arterial infections including  infected aneurysms,  endocarditis and arthritis.
