Santa Maria Foods Recalls Prosciutto for Possible Listeria

Mastro-Ham-ListeriaSanta Maria Foods of Ontario is recalling about 2,600 pounds of whole boneless ham prosciutto product because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. No reports of illness have been reported in connection with the consumption of this product.

The recalled product was shipped to California and Michigan for further distribution. The case labels have the establishment number “473A” within the Canadian mark of inspection.

The product is 50 pound boxes labeled “PROSCIUTTO x 4 GOLD” with case codes BR031356 or BR031374, produced on November 14 and November 15, 2013. Each box has four individually wrapped hams with case codes BR031341 or BR031354. The problem was discovered by FSIS sampling during routine inspection.

Foods contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can cause listeriosis, a potentially serious infection. If you purchased any of this product, do not eat it. Return it to the place of purchase for a refund. If you ate any of the recalled product, monitor yourself for the next 70 days for symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes food poisoning, which include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, and loss of balance, sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other GI problems. Pregnant women may only have a very mild illness, but listeriosis can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.
