Zip Recalls Sprats in Brine For Potential Listeria

Zip International Groups of Edison, NJ is recalling Baltic Sprats in Spicy Brine for possible Listeria contamination. The recalled product, imported from Latvia, was sold in 15.8 Oz (450 g)  plastic packaging with a “best by” date, located on the top, of October 12, 2013 (UPC: 4750217602547). It was sold to distributors and retail grocery stores in New York State beginning on May 31, 2013 and ending on June 6, 2013.

Recall SignageConsumers who have purchased this product should not eat it. Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, pregnant women and others with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The recall was issued after routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets Food Inspectors and subsequent tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 732-225-3600, 9:00AM-5:00 PM EST from Monday to Friday.
