Paprika Sold at TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods Recalled for Salmonella

paprika-salmonella-recallThe TJX Companies Inc.of Framingham, Mass. is recalling “ecoato” Sweet Paprika Powder products for potential Salmonella contamination. The products were sold at Sold at TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods stores in 17 states, Washington DC and Puerto Rico. No illnesses have been reported, but consumers should not use the recalled product as Salmonella can cause serious illness.

The problem was discovered during testing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The company has alerted retailers to remove the product from store shelves and has temporarily suspended operations. The recalled product was sold in 160 gram, light green tin packages that were marked as lot #8147, with an expiration date of October 2015.

The company estimates that roughly 150 units were sold between June 2014 and July 2014 at its T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods stores in the following  locations: Alabama, Maryland, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, South Carolina, District of Columbia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Florida, New Hampshire, Texas, Georgia, New York, Virginia, Illinois, North Carolina, Louisiana and Puerto Rico.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of an infection include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare cases, infection can move to the bloodstream producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections endocarditis and arthritis.
