Sandwiches, Wraps Recalled for Listeria in Texas

Great American Marketing of  Houston is recalling 475 pounds of FSIS and FDA-regulated, ready-to-eat sandwiches and wraps due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. There have been no reports of illness associated with these products, however consumers who have purchased them should not eat them at Listeria can cause serious illness an death.

The recalled sandwich and wrap products were produced on July 15, 2014, and then shipped to retail locations in Texas. The cases and product labels are marked with the “sell by” date  07/26/14 and  the establishment number “EST 31680” or “P-31680” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The problem was discovered during testing by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS).

The recalled products include: 7.4 ounce plastic-covered tray packages of Chicken Caesar Wraps, 8.1 ounce plastic-covered tray packages of Club Wraps, 10.5 ounce plastic-covered tray packages of Ham and Cheddar Premium sandwiches and 10.5 ounce plastic-covered tray packages containing Turkey & Swiss Premium sandwiches.

Symptoms of a Listeria infection can take up to 70 days after exposure to develop and include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.  Sometimes diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms also occur.  Among pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. Others at special risk include young children, older adults and those with weakened immune systems.
