Rio Tex Wholesale Meats of Texas is recalling about 58,180 pounds of ready-to-eat beef products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. FSIS personnel reviewed sampling data at the facility and foundĀ a recurrence of Listeria isolates in environmental samples. That indicates that the sanitary measures in place were insufficient to prevent contamination.
The recalled products are 20 pound boxes containing four 5-pound packages of “Hausman Foods Cooked Beef Taco Filling”, 20 pound boxes with four 5-pound packages of “Hausman Foods Seasoned Cooked Beef Barbacoa”, 20 pound boxes containing four 5-pound packages of “Hausman Foods Fully Cooked Barbacoa” and 20 pound boxes containing four 5-pound packages of “Hausman Foods Beef Carne Guisada.” Also recalled are 15 pound and 45 pound packages containing three 5-pound or 15-pound packages of “Rio-Tex-Meats Barbacoa.”
The products all have the establishment number “EST. 13545” inside the USDA mark of inspection. They were shipped for hotel, restaurant, and institutional use in Texas. You can see pictures of product labels at the USDA web site.
Listeria can cause serious illness, especially in pregnant women, who may only be mildly sick, children, and the elderly. Symptoms of this illness include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, and loss of balance. If you ate any of the recalled products, monitor yourself for the symptoms for the next 70 days. If you do get sick, see your doctor.
If you have any of these products in your home, discard in a sealed or double bagged container. Then wash your freezer or refrigerator with a mild bleach solution to kill any bacteria.
