Starwest Botanicals Recalls Organic Whole Cardamom Pods for Possible Salmonella

Starwest Botanicals of California is recalling Organic Cardamom Pods Green (Whole) because they may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. No illnesses have been reported to the company to date in connection with this recall issue.

The recalled product was sold nationwide via several methods. It was shipped directly to Starwest Botanicals customers who purchased them online from the company’s website, or to mail order customers, or was held for pickup by the customer at the Starwest Botanicals location in Sacramento, California. The pods were sold between January 15, 2018 and March 2, 2018 in one pound mylar bags and in bulk packs.

The first item recalled is Starwest Botanicals Organic Cardamom Pods Green (Whole) in 1 pound bags, with UPC number 7-6796302528-9. The item number is 209735-01, and the lot number is 75593; both can be found on the label attached to the bag. The second item is Starwest Botanicals Organic Cardamom Pods Green (Whole) in bulk packs with UPC number 7-6796302527-2. The item number on the product is is 209735-00, and the lot number is 90186-00. Those numbers are attacked to the bulk pack label.

No other lots of the product are affected by this recall, and no other products made by this company are affected. If you bought this item, do not use it, even if you plan to cook with it. Throw it away in a sealed bag or take it back to the place of purchase for a refund.

The symptoms of a Salmonella infection can include diarrhea that may be bloody, a fever, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Most people get sick within 6 to 72 hours after exposure to the bacteria. And most people recover on their own without medical intervention.
