Steve’s Real Food of Salt Lake City, Utah, is voluntarily recalling one lot of their frozen dog food turkey recipe for possible Salmonella contamination. No illnesses, human or pet, have been reported to date in connection with this problem.
The recalled lot was distributed to pet food stores in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Iowa, Kansas, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington. Fifty-two cases were distributed between June 27, 2017 and July 15, 2017.
The Steve’s Real Food product was sold frozen in 5 pound bags. The bags have the UPC numberĀ 6-91730-15303-8, lot number E 178, and best by date of 09/27/18. The product is Raw Frozen Dog Food Turkey Canine Recipe in the form of turkey nuggets.
The Nebraska Department of Agriculture purchased a retail sample that was collected and tested positive for Salmonella. Consumers should follow safe handling tips published on the Steve’s Real Food packaging when getting rid of the dog food.
If you purchased this food, do not feed it to your pet. Throw it away after wrapping it so other animals can’t get at it, or take it back to the store where you bought it for a full refund.
Wash your hands well after handling this product. Clean out your freezer or refrigerator where you stored the product to kill any remaining bacteria.
Dogs sickened with Salmonella infections may be lethargic, with diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets may only have decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Since pets can transmit this infection to people. it’s important that you take your pet to the vet if he is exhibiting any of these symptoms. Also be careful when handling any raw pet food; treat it as you would raw ground beef. Wash your hands after handling this product and don’t let it cross-contamination other surfaces in your home.
