Steve’s Real Food of Salt Lake City, Utah is recalling one lot of 5 pound Turducken Recipe, one lot of 2 pound Quest Emu Diet, and one lot of 2 pound Quest Beef Diet for possible Salmonella and/or Listeria monocytogenes contamination. No pet or human illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this recall.
The recalled products are Steve’s Real Food Turducken Recipe/5#, with lot number J155, UPC number 6-91730-15304-5, and best by date 6/4/19; Quest Emu Diet/2# with lot number B138, UPC number 6-91730-17103-2, and best by date 5/18/19; and Quest Beef Diet/2# with lot number A138, UPC number 6-91730-17101-8, and best by date 5/18/19. The firm was told by the Washington Department of Agriculture that samples tested positive for Salmonella and/or Listeria monocytogenes. The firm then conducted their own test which was negative for the bacteria. But the company is voluntarily recalling these products.
Consumers are encouraged to check the lot code and best by date of any 5 pound frozen Turducken, 2 pound Quest Emu, or 2 pound Quest Beef they may have in their homes. If you have them, either throw them away in a sealed package, or take them back to the place of purchase for a refund.
People can contract infections from pet food in several ways. They may get sick if they handle a contaminated product and don’t wash their hands with soap and water before eating. Pets can be carriers of these pathogens, even if they don’t show any symptoms, and can shed the bacteria in their feces. The bacteria can then contaminate their coats and get on the animals’ feet.
Pets with Salmonella infections or Listeria monocytogenes infections can have decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Bloody diarrhea and vomiting may also be present. If your pet has eaten this food and has been sick, see your veterinarian. If anyone in your family has been ill with the symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning or Listeria monocytogenes food poisoning, see your doctor.
