Berkley & Jensen Pig Ears Recalled For Possible Salmonella

Chef Toby is expanding its recall of pig ears for possible Salmonella contamination to include another brand: Berkley & Jensen pig ears. The recall notice does not state that no illnesses are linked to this product, but does state that “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”), together with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”) and State partners, is investigating a link between pig ear pet treats and human cases of salmonellosis. This recall is being expanded after Rhode Island Department of Health testing found Salmonella in ‘Berkley & Jensen’ brand pig ear pet treats.”

Dog Goods is expanding the recall to include all 30-packs of “Berkley & Jensen” brand pig ears wold at BJ’s Wholesale Club stores. They were purchased from a single supplier in Brazil from September 2018 through August 2019.

Dog Goods USA LLC has been contacted by the FDA and is conducting a voluntary recall of non-irradiated bulk and packaged pig ears branded Chef Toby Pig Ears with the lot codes indicated in a chart, which Dog Goods bought from a single supplier in Brazil from September 2018 through August 2019 and distributed nationwide in retail stores. You can see the chart of the lot codes at the FDA web site.

Pets with Salmonella can be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets may only have decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. If your pet is experiencing these symptoms, see your vet.

People can contract Salmonella from this product by touching it or by interacting with a pet who has eaten one of the pig ears and has contracted the infection. Human symptoms of Salmonella include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea that may be bloody, and abdominal and stomach cramps.

The company has launched an internal investigation, but has not found any vulnerability. They are cooperating with the FDA.

If you purchased this product with one of the above lot codes, don’t eat it. Throw it away in a sealed container so other animals can’t access it, or take it back the store where you purchased it for a full refund.
