Biltmore Smoked Sockeye Salmon Recalled For Possible Listeria

Seven Seas International LLC of St. Petersburg, Florida is recalling Biltmore Smoked Sockeye Salmon for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recall notice was posted on the Publix web site. The recall notice does not state whether or not anyone has been sickened by this product.

Routine regulatory testing by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services found that the bacteria may be present in some product. The recalled product is Biltmore Smoked Sockeye Salmon sold in 4 ounce (113 gram) packages.  The GTIN number is 007-36211-88774, and the lot code/best by date is 41 CM/May 23 2019.

If you purchased this product, do not eat it. Discard it in a secure garbage can so other people and animals can’t access it, or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. The recall notice did not state where the product was sold, others than to state it was sold at Publix stores and was not sold at GreenWise Market.

It’s a good idea, after you have discarded the salmon, to clean your refrigerator with a mild bleach solution to kill any bacteria. Use one tablespoon liquid chlorine bleach to one gallon of warm water. Remove all the items from the fridge and wipe them with this solution, then wipe with clean water and dry. Wash the walls and shelves of the refrigerator with the bleach solution, then rinse and dry. Wash y9our hands with soap and water after cleaning.

The symptoms of listeriosis, the illness caused by the pathogen, can take up to 70 days to appear. If you ate this product, monitor yourself for the symptoms of this illness for 2 months. Symptoms include high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, muscle aches, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. People who are most at risk for serious complications from listeriosis are pregnant women, who can suffer miscarriage and stillbirth, the very young, the elderly, and anyone with a compromised immune system or chronic illness. If you do feel sick, see your doctor.
