Pets can contact Salmonella infections and pass the illness on to people. Symptoms of this infection in dogs can include lethargy, diarrhea that may be bloody, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will only have decreased appetite, abdominal pain and fever. And still other pets may have no symptoms at all, but can infect other pets and people.
People can get sick by touching contaminated products and then eating without washing their hands. Pets can shed the pathogen in the feces, which can then contaminate the pet’s coat and the environment.
Symptoms of salmonellosis in people include vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, nausea, chills, and diarrhea that may be bloody. Symptoms usually start 12 to 72 hours after exposure. Long term complications of this infection can include reactive arthritis and high blood pressure.
If you purchased any of these products, do not give them to your pet. Throw them away in a sealed package inside a secure garbage can, or take them back to the place of purchase for a full refund.
