Tequila’s Mexican Grill, located at 430 North Cochran Avenue in Charlotte, Michigan, was closed again on June 21, 2019 amid a suspected outbreak, according to press releases issued by the Barry-Eaton District Health Department. The latest update, issued on June 21, 2019, states that “information from the investigation and from epidemiology suggests the illness is not norovirus.”
At first, ten people contacted the health department and said they had been ill after visiting the restaurant. The restaurant was closed on June 18, 2019, and was allowed to re-open on June 19, 2019 after environmental cleaning and staff interviews were conducted.
Health department staff then reviewed additional food handling procedures at the facility and found that it was in the best interest of public health to close the restaurant on June 21. Once all requirements are implemented, BEDHD will consider re-opening the restaurant, according to the release. The source of the illness is not known and the investigation is ongoing.
As of June 20, 2019, 39 people have contacted the health department to report illness after eating at the restaurant between Sunday, June 16, 2019, and Tuesday, June 18, 2019. Officials have interviewed some of those who have been sick.
The June 19, 2019 press release stated that “all known individuals who were ill report feeling better.” Health department officials are asking that anyone who ate at Tequila’s Mexican Grill on Sunday, June 16 through Tuesday, June 18, 2019 and have been ill with nausea, abdominal cramps, vomiting, and/or diarrhea, to contact the Environmental Health Division at 517-541-2615 Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM. If you are feeling ill, also contact your healthcare provider.
