UNFI is recalling five pound bags of its Wild Harvest Organic Flour for possible E. coli contamination. The pathogen was fond during routine sampling of this product. There have not been any direct consumer reports of confirmed illnesses related to this product.

The recall is for Wild Harvest Organic All-Purpose Flour, Unbleached. the package UPC number is 711535509158 and the best if used by date is AA BEST IF USED BY 010820 CC 15:58. These numbers can be found on top of the product label. This recall only affects this one code date of the flour currently in stores or in consumers’ pantries.

Check your pantry to see if you have purchased this flour. If you have, or if you have decanted the flour into another container and no longer have the label, discard it. Throw it away after wrapping the flour in a package and putting it in a secure garbage can with a tight fitting lid. You can also take the product back to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.

You should then clean your pantry and the container the flour was stored in with a mild bleach solution to make sure that there are no bacteria remaining in your kitchen. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling the flour and after cleaning. And this recall is a reminder that no one should eat any foods containing uncooked flour.

Symptoms of an E. coli infection can include a mild fever, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea that can be bloody and watery. Most people are sick for about a week, and symptoms usually begin within three or four days of eating contaminated food.  If you or anyone you know has been ill with these symptoms, see a doctor.
