E. coli O121 Outbreak in Canada Linked to Flour Grows to 28 Cases

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has updated their investigation into the E. coli O121 outbreak linked to flours and flour products. There are now 28 people sick in that outbreak. The case count by province is: British Columbia (12), Saskatchewan (4), Alberta (5), Ontario (1) and Newfoundland and Labrador (5). One of the 28 cases was a visitor to Canada. The illness onset dates range from November 2016 to March 2017. Seven individuals have been hospitalized. These patients have recovered or are recovering. No deaths have been reported. The average age of ill individuals is 24 years. There have been several recalls linked to this outbreak; all of the flours and flour products are produced by Ardent Mills. Flour Recall for E. coli O121 Updated Again in Canada

The food recall warning issued on April 12, 2017 in Canada for flour that may be contaminated with E. coli O121 has been updated again. There is an outbreak associated with flour in that country, but the notice states that "there have been no confirmed illnesses associated with the products identified in this Food Recall Warning." The recall of Robin Hood flour in Canada for possible E. coli O121 contamination has ben updated to include more information. There is an outbreak linked to this product in Canada. At least 25 people are sick in four provinces in that outbreak, although the recall notice states that one person has been sickened. The recalled product is Robin Hood brand All Purpose Flour, Original, in 10 kg packages. The codes on the product are Lot codes containing BB/MA 2018 AL 17 and 6 291 548. Only product with a best before date of April 17, 2018 (2018 AL 17) and the production code 6 291 548 is being recalled. The UPC number of the product is 0 59000 01652 8. Smucker Foods of Canada Corp. and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency are recalling Robin Hood brand all purpose flour in one size for possible E. coli O121 contamination. There is an outbreak linked to this product that has sickened at least 25 people in four provinces. The recalled product is Robin Hood All Purpose Flour, Original, in 10 kilogram bags. The lot codes are BB/MA 2018 AL 17 and 6 291 548, and the UPC number is 0 59000 01652 8. The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation into this recall and the outbreak. E. coli Outbreak Linked to Robin Hood Flour Sickens 25 in Canada

An E. coli O121 outbreak linked to Robin Hood flour in Canada has sickened at least 25 people, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada. All patients identified in this outbreak have samples with E. coli bacteria that match genetically. This outbreak is reminiscent of the 2016 E. coli outbreak in the United States linked to General Mills flour. And it's another reminder that flour is a raw agricultural product, can be contaminated with pathogenic bacteria, and should never be eaten raw. The flour has been recalled. E. coli O121 Outbreak in Canada

The Public Health Agency of Canada is investigating an outbreak of E. coli O121. Twelve confirmed cases of E. coli 0121 have been identified in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Newfoundland. The cases all have a matching genetic fingerprint. Illness onset dates range from November to December 2016. Four people have been hospitalized. And officials do not know what caused the outbreak. The most common ways to contract an E. coli infection are by eating undercooked or raw ground meat, or by eating contaminated fruits and vegetables. You can also acquire this infection by petting animals, more specifically ruminant animals, which harbor the pathogenic bacteria in their intestines. Strange Secondary Recall for Trout Made with General Mills Flour

A strange recall has been issued for trout filets that were apparently made with recalled General Mills flour. That flour was recalled this summer after at least 63 people in 24 states were sickened with E. coli O121 and O26 that were linked to that product. General Mills issued three different recalls over the summer, and five secondary recalls were issued from corporations that made products with the flour. The only retail facility to issue a recall is Schnucks. The FDA does not have any notice of this recall on their site as of October 10, 2016. The E. coli O121 and O26 outbreak linked to recalled General Mills flour has many people concerned. Since flour is such a ubiquitous product, any kitchen in the country could contain some flour that has been recalled. General Mills Flour Outbreak Now Includes Two Strains of E. coli

The General Mills flour E. coli outbreak now includes two strains of the bacteria: E coli O121 and E. coli O26.  Initially, only one strain, E. coli O121, was linked the outbreak, which now includes 46 cases in 21 states. But, whole genome sequencing  tests performed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) identified the second strain. Like their better-known relative E.coli O157:H7,  E. coli O26 and E. coli O121 produce shiga toxins that can cause serious illness. In this outbreak, 13 people have been hospitalized and one of them has developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, (HUS) a life-threatening complication of E. coli infections that leads to kidney failure. General Mills Flour E. coli O26 and O121 Outbreak Grows

The CDC has announced that the multistate outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli infections linked to recalled General Mills flour has grown to include four more patients. Now 46 people in 21 states are sick. One person has developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) as a complication of their illness. General Mills has expanded its recall of flour products to include more production dates.
