The Evergreen Fresh broccoli sprouts Salmonella outbreak has grown to include 32 people in six states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That is an increase of 10 more patients and two more states since the initial announcement of the outbreak on September 9, 2026.
The case count by state is: Idaho (1), Minnesota (1), Montana (4), Oregon (1), Utah (1), and Washington (24). The new states are Minnesota and Oregon. Illness onset dates range from July 7, 2026 to September 3, 2026. And the patient age range is from 2 to 87 years. Three patients have been hospitalized, for a hospitalization rate of 9.4%, which is low for a Salmonella outbreak.
Whole genome sequencing showed that bacteria from patient isolates are closely related genetically, which means that people in this outbreak likely got sick from eating the same food. Officials in Montana collected an unopened package of broccoli sprouts from a patient’s home and testing showed it is the same Salmonella Bovismorbificans strain that made people sick in this outbreak. Then officials in Washington state also collected and tested samples from a sick person’s home and from a local food coop. Both samples tested positive for the same strain of Salmonella Bovismorbificans.
Of 27 people interviewed, 26, or 96%, said they ate sprouts or microgreens before they got sick. Twenty-two said they ate broccoli sprouts. That is a significant percentage, which indicates that broccoli sprouts caused these illnesses. Traceback conducted by the FDA and states identified broccoli sprouts produced by Evergreen Fresh Sprouts as a source of illness in this outback.
On September 10, 2026, Evergreen Fresh Sprouts recalled 215 cases of broccoli sprouts. If you bought some, do not eat them, but throw them away or take them back to the place of purchase for a refund.
