Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) tests show Listeria strains found in Roos cheese are highly related to those isolated from ill patients, according to an update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The results add "further confidence that cheese products produced by Roos Foods were a likely source of the outbreak," says the CDC. Normally, a process called pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) is used to match outbreak isolates, but WGS provides an even clearer distinction of isolates, according to the CDC. The recall of Roos Foods cheeses for Listeria monocytogenes contamination has been expanded. There is an outbreak connected with the recall of these products. Hard cheeses are now being recalled as well as the company's sour cream products. The expanded recall is also available in Spanish at the FDA web site. The recall is expanded to include all product sizes and all containers of Santa Rosa de Lima Queso Duro Blando (hard cheese), and Mexicana Queso Cojito Molido. In addition, ALL sizes and containers of these cheese products are being recalled: Amigo, Anita, Mexicana, and Santa Rose de Lima brands of: Cuajada En Terron, Cuajada/Cuajadita Cacer, Cuajada Fresca, Queso Fresco Round, and Queso Duro Viejo (hard cheeses), Requeson, Queso de Huerta and Quesco Fresco. Roos Foods Recall Now Includes Sour Cream
Roos Foods, which made and recalled 16 types of soft cheeses linked to a Listeria monocytogenes outbreak, has now recalled sour cream produced at the company's Kenton plant. One death in California and seven illnesses in Maryland have been reported as a result of the contamination of the cheeses. Three of the sickened persons are newborns. You can see pictures of the labels of the recalled cheeses at the FDA web site. The recall now includes Crema Pura Mexicana Cultured Sour Cream, according to the Delaware Division of Public Health. The product was distributed in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. No bacteria was found in the product, but environmental tests found the bacteria at the factory. The February 23 recall comes two days after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced a Listeria outbreak associated with the cheese that killed one person in California and sickened seven others n Maryland.
