Companies Recall Shredded Cheese For Listeria

The state of Wisconsin is requesting a recall of Brennan’s Cellars cheese shredded by Alpine Slicing and Cheese Conversion of Monroe, Wisconsin. An independent laboratory found some of those products contained Listeria.

Recall Signs 3Several companies which had cheese processed in that plant are also recalling their product “out of an abundance of caution”, even though their cheeses did not test positive for Listeria.

More detail about these products was released on January 5, 2011. Product details for the cheeses which tested positive for Listeria:

  • Cheeses sold in Brennan’s stores in Dane, Green, and Milwaukee counties
  • Brennan’s Cellars Shredded Premium Fondue Blend – Emmentaler Swiss & Gruyere Cheese
  • Brennan’s Cellars Shredded Mild Colored Cheddar Cheese
  • Brennan’s Cellars Shredded Part Skim Mozzarella Cheese

In addition, World Cheese is recalling Haolam shredded cheeses, which were processed in the same plant, even though their products have so far tested negative for Listeria.

    • 8 ounce bags and 16 ounce bags
      • Expiration dates of June 5, 2012 through September 4, 2012
      • Cheddar
      • Fancy
      • Mozzarella
      • Muenster
      • Pizza
      • R/F Cheddar
      • R/F Muenster
    • 32 ounce bags
      • Expiration dates of February 6, 2012 through May 7, 2012
      • Gourmet blend
      • Mozzarella
    • 5 pound bags
      • Pack dates of September 8, 2011 through December 7, 2011
      • Cheddar
      • Mozzarella
      • Muenster

Miller’s shredded cheeses are also being recalled, despite testing negative for Listeria so far.

  • Miller’s shredded cheese varieties:
    • 8 ounce bags and 16 ounce bags
      • Expiration dates of June 5, 2012 through September 4, 2012
      • Cheddar
      • Fancy
      • Mozzarella
      • Muenster
      • Pizza
    • 32 ounce bags
      • Expiration dates of February 6, 2011 through May 7, 2012
      • Mozzarella
    • 5 pound bags
      • Pack dates of September 8, 2011 through December 7, 2011
      • Cheddar
      • Monterey jack
      • Mozzarella
      • Muenster

No illnesses have been reported in connection with consumption of these products.

Listeria can cause listeriosis, a serious disease. Pregnant women, young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems can become very ill or die. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths. Healthy people usually exhibit short-term symptoms such as severe headache, stiffness, high fever, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
