Procter & Gamble Recalls Dry Pet Food for Possible Salmonella

The Procter & Gamble Company is recalling dry pet food because it may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. Animals may get sick and pass the bacteria to people, and people can get sick simply by handling the food. There have been no reports of illness to date.

EukanubaYou an see the large list of recalled products at the FDA site.  The foods recalled include Eukanuba dog food from Large Breed Mature Adult to Small Breed Puppy and specific breed foods; Iams dog food from Large Breed Senior Plus to Premium Protection Chicken; and Iams cat food from adult chicken to hairball and weight control. The products come in various weights with different package sizes and expiration dates. You can see all of the product labels at the FDA site.

Pets infected with Salmonella bacteria can be lethargic with bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets show no symptoms but can be carriers of the pathogenic bacteria. If your pet has eaten any of these products and has these symptoms, take her to the vet immediately.

The recalled products are about 0.1% of total annual production. The pet food was sold at retailers across the country. If you purchased any of these products, don’t use them; discard in a sealed container so other animals can’t get at it.
