Curry Chicken Salad Recalled for Possible Listeria

Schnucks Kitchen of Missouri is recalling about 130 pounds of curry chicken salad because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. No reports of illness associated with the consumption of this product have been received.

The product, in three-pound bags, was sold at deli counters. Consumer packaging may vary because of this fact. The recalled product is 3 pound sealed bags of Curry White Meat Chicken Salad with Walnuts. The plastic containers in various sizes the salad was sold in may have a purchase date between April 24, 2014 and May 2, 104. Bulk case labels or packaging may have the case code 0989674 or 0963124 and the establishment number “EST. P-13562” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The product was distributed to delis in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, and Wisconsin.

Schnucks Curry Chicken Salad RecallThe problem was discovered when routine FSIS sampling discovered the bacteria in the product on April 28, 2014. That product was held by the firm and did not enter commerce. But further investigation by the company determined that bulk walnuts from an outside supplier may have been contaminated with the pathogen, so this salad was recalled.

If you purchased this product, do not eat it. Discard it in a sealed container or return to the place of purchase for a refund. Please check your freezer to see if you have the salad; public health officials are concerned that the product may be in home freezers.

If you ate this product, you must monitor yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis, the illness caused by the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, for the next 70 days. That is how long it can take for symptoms to manifest. Those symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, diarrhea, and other GI symptoms. Some people may only have a mild flu-like illness, including pregnant women. But listeriosis can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.

picked up this chicken salad at Schnicks Speode and Olive of the 2nd of May. I,m a substitute teacher and ate part of it for lunch. It didn’t taste good. I just read about it today on May the 4th. Why wasn’t this taken off the shelf?
