Sun Tree Recalls Walnuts for Possible Listeria Contamination

Sun Tree LLC is recalling California grown shelled walnuts because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. FDA sampling found the pathogenic bacteria in walnuts from Golden State Foods that supplied the walnuts packed for retail. Third party lab testing didn’t reveal the bacteria, but Sun Tree is recalling them out of an abundance of caution. No reports of illness have been received to date.

The recalled nuts are in 46 cases of 24 count 12-ounce produce bags labeled California Grown Shelled Walnuts. The lot number is 42720, best by is 12/11/2014, and the UPC number is 69887507806. They were sold to retailers in Kansas City, Kansas in March 2014.

If you purchased this product, do not eat it. Dispose of them in a sealed container or return to the place of purchase for a refund.

If you ate any of these walnuts, symptoms of listeriosis, the illness caused by the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, for the next 70 days. Those symptoms include muscle aches, flu-like symptoms, fever, upset stomach, diarrhea, stiff neck, headache, loss of balance, confusion, or convulsions. Pregnant women are especially susceptible to this disease. They may only have a mild illness, but listeriosis can cause stillbirth and miscarriage.
