Carolina Prime Pet Recalling Bullstrips for Possible Salmonella

Carolina Prime Pet Inc is recalling Priority Total Pet Care All Natural Bullstrips in a 5-count package for possible Salmonella contamination. This lot tested positive for Salmonella by the Colorado Department of Agriculture.

RecallThe product has UPC number 0-21130-42080-3, and lot codes 20082712 S 3195 and 20090312 S 3195. You can see a product photo at the FDA site. The product was sold in Safeway stores in Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, South Dakota, Virginia, Washington DC and Wyoming. It was also sold at Vons, Pavilions and Pak ‘N Save stores in California; Randalls and Tom Thumb stores in Texas; Genuardi’s stores in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and Dominick’s stores in Illinois. This product was distributed from September 1, 2012 until now. There have not been any reported cases of human or animal illness related to this recall.

Salmonella can sicken animals, and then transmit the bacteria to humans. People can also be at risk simply by handling the contaminated product. Pets with Salmonella infections can be lethargic and have diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets may have milder symptoms, or not appear ill at all but be carriers of the bacteria. In humans, a Salmonella infection will cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. More serious complications can occur, including arthritis, urinary tract symptoms, and arterial infections.
