Listeria Sausage Recall Prompts Closure of Capital Packers

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has suspended the operating license at Establishment 231 of Capital Packers Inc. in Edmonton, Alberta after the company failed to correct deficiencies previously identified through CFIA inspections. The suspension comes the same day that the company issued a recall for to kinds of ham sausage because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Recall SignageAll products at the plant are under CFIA detention and control and the CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation to determine if products shipped from the plant pose any potential risk to consumers.  The company will not be able to resume operations until the necessary corrective actions have taken place.

The products under recallCapital brand and Compliments brand ham sausage made in Canada are being recalled because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

The products under recall include: Capital ham sausage in 300 g packages with the UPC code: T0 64946 51100 6 2012 DE 26; and Compliemts brand ham sausage in 375 g packages with UPC codes of 0 68820 10061 4 2012 DE 26. Consumers who have purchased these products should not eat them. These products may have been distributed throughout Canada.

No illnesses have been reported in association with this recall. But Listeria can cause severe illness. Symptoms of listeriosis include headache, fever muscle aches and nausea. Listeriosis during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, miscarriage or even stillbirth.
