Plano, Texas has added QR codes to their publicly displayed restaurant inspection certificates making it easy for consumers with smartphones to access health safety information.
QR Codes are barcodes containing data that can read by smartphones, if the phone has a QR code reader app. “The code links into our web site with hits to our site increasing 61 percent since the program’s implementation in September 2011,” said Environmental Health Manager Geoffrey Heinicke in a statement.
The program, developed by City of Plano’s Environmental Health Department, has been selected as a “Promising Practice” by the National Association of County & City Health Officials (NACCHO). “Receiving this designation poises our program to become part of the NACCHO Model Practices Database, which is utilized by health professionals across the nation.”
The Promising Practice designation makes the program eligible to attain a Model Practice designation and inclusion in an online collection of innovative best practices in public health.
