In Canada, Hot Dog Relish Recalled for Possible Botulism

In Canada, Orange Blossom Farm is recalling Hot Dog Relish because it may permit the growth of Clostridium botulinum. The relish was sold in 500 ml containers at the St. Jacob’s Farmer’s Market in Ontario. No illnesses have been reported to date in association with the consumption of this product.

If you have the recalled product in your home, it should be discarded in a sealed container. Foods contaminated wiht Clostridium botulinum toxin will not look, smell, or taste spoiled. But just a tiny amount of the toxin this bacteria produces can cause paralysis and death. The bacteria grows in anaerobic environments, such as low acid canned foods, that are improperly sealed or not fully processed. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, blurred or double vision, dry mouth, respiratory failure, and paralysis.
