Manda Packing Company of a Baker, La. is recalling more than 20,000 lbs of cooked roast beef deli meat due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection (USDA FSIS). The problem was discovered by the Tennessee Department of Health which tested an intact sample of cooked roast beef. No illnesses have been reported in association with the recall.
The recall includes the following products sold in various weights: Manda Supreme Roast Beef, Four Star Cajun Roast Beef, Four Star Roast Beef, Cajun Prize Roast Beef, Manda Supreme Natural Roast Beef, Manda Natural Roast Beef, Manda New Orleans Style Roast Beef and Manda Whole Wet Pack Roast Beef. Packed on February 27, 2013, the products were shipped for further distribution and to retail deli stores in Louisiana, Texas, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Illinois, and Tennessee. If the recalled products were sold sliced at retail delis, they will not have this packaging information.
Eating food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a potentially fatal disease. Symptoms of listeriosis can take up to two months to develop and include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can cause miscarriages and stillbirths, among pregnant women. Children, seniors and those with compromised immune systems are most at risk.
