Weekly Food Recall Roundup: June 5, 2016

This week’s food recalls included a General Mills recall of 10 million pounds of flour for E. coli that was triggered by a 20-state E. coli outbreak; the expansion of SunOpta’s sunflower seed recall for Listeria which triggered a number of secondary recalls and a number of recalls for foods with undeclared allergens.

Pathogens

The Meadow Gold Dairy plant in Boise is recalling Meadow Gold brand Old Style Whipping Cream and Meadow Gold Dairy Pure brand Whipping Cream and Half and Half due to insufficient pasteurization. Because of this problem, it is possible that the products could be contaminated with pathogens present in raw milk, including Salmonella, Campylobacter, Listeria or E. coli.

An E. coli outbreak that has sickened 38 people in 20 states has triggered a General Mills recall of 10 million pounds of flour, the company said in a statement on its website today.Flours included in the recall were sold under the brand names Gold Medal flour, Wondra, and Signature Kitchens, which is sold at Albertsons, Jewel, Shaws, Vons, United, Randalls, and Acme stores

SunOpta expanded its recall of sunflower kernel products due to potential contamination with Listeria. The expansion covers products originating from SunOpta’s facility in Crookston, Minn. between May 31, 2015 and January 31, 2016.

Secondary recalls from the SunOpta expansion include:

MaraNatha All Natural Sunflower Seed Butter was recalled for possible Listeria contamination.

Mountain Thins Trail Mix recall for possible Listeria contamination was expanded to include one additional lot.

Kashi recalled granola bars. The recalled products are Kashi® Trail Mix Chewy Granola Bars in 7.4 ounce (6 count) packages, with UPC number 18627 03000 and better if used before dates of JAN0417; JAN0517; JAN0617; JAN0717; JAN0817; and JAN09 17. Also recalled is Bear Naked® Soft Baked Granola, Cinnamon + Sunflower Butter in two sizes. The first is in 11 ounce packages, with UPC number 84623 10163 and better if used by dates of JAN 10 2017 and JAN 11 2017. The 26 ounce size of the Soft Baked Granola has a UPC number of 84623 10173 and best if used by dates of DEC 24 2016; DEC 25 2016; JAN 11 2017; JAN 12 2017; and JAN 13, 2017. Kashi Company expanded its previously announced recall to include two varieties of Kashi brand snack bars – including one product in Canada – and two varieties of Bear Naked granola for potential Listeria.

Hickory Harvest Foods expanded its recall of sunflower kernels and trail mix.

Clif Bar & Company of Emeryville, CA.  issued a recall of CLIF BAR Nuts & Seeds energy bars, CLIF BAR Sierra Trail Mix energy bars, and CLIF Mojo Mountain Mix trail mix bars.

Windy Acres Candy & Nut Company recalled Windy Acres No Salt Sunflower Seeds, Windy Acres Fruity Trail Mix & Jungle Jim’s Roast No Salt Sunflower Seeds due to potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes.

Troyer Cheese is recalling some sunflower products under the Backroad Country brand for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Publix Super Markets is issuing a voluntary recall for Nut, Seed and Raisin mix.

Quaker Quinoa Granola Bars expanded its recall to include: 6.1 ounce boxes of Quaker Quinoa Granola Bars Chocolate Nut Medley with UPC code 30000 32241 and Best Before Dates before 11/15/16 and 6.1 ounce boxes of Quaker Quinoa Granola Bars Yogurt, Fruit & Nut with UPC 30000 32243 and Best Before Dates before 11/15/16.

Hy-Vee, Inc., of West Des Moines, Iowa, recalled one its salad toppings and additional trail mix products.

Extraneous material

CapriSun was recalled for glass fragments. CapriSun fruit punch roarin’ waters with code dates 08 DEC 2016 GR02CT762 and 09 DEC 2016 GR02CT762; CapriSun tropical punch with best when used by code dates of 09 DEC 2016 GR02CT762. The Kool-Aid products include Kool-Aid Jammers Strawberry Kiwi with best by code date of 09 DEC 2016 GR02CT762, and Kool-Aid Jammers Grape with code date 10 DEC 2016 GR02CT762. Kool-Aid Jammers Cherry with code dates 10 DEC 2016 GR02CT762 and 11 DEC 2016 Gr02CT762 is recalled, along with Kool-Aid Jammers Tropical Punch with codes 11 DEC 2016 Gr02CT762 and 12 DEC 2016 GR02CT762.

Undeclared allergens

Whole Foods Market is issuing an advisory to consumers who bought some Kimchi products from their 365 by Whole Foods Market store in Silver Lake, California, because they contain fish, shellfish, and pine nuts that were not declared on the label.

Hostess Brands is recalling 710,000 cases of snack cakes and donuts after being notified by a supplier, Grain Craft,  that certain lots of its flour may have been contaminated with undeclared peanut residue. The recalled products include Zingers, Ding Dongs, Donuts and other snack cakes. Consumers with peanut allergies can check detailed product recalled information by clicking the preceding link.

Chelsea Food Services of Denver recalled Jarlsberg Cheese Spread with Cookies and Cream Dessert labeling, because it contains undeclared eggs.

Bayou Brothers of Austin, Texas  issued a recall for 33 oz. jars of Bayou Brothers Creole Sauce because they contain undeclared fish. The recalled Bayou Brothers Creole Sauce jars were only distributed in Texas.  They have “Best By” Date codes of “23MAR17” through “18MAY18” and the UPC  91037 60907.

Frontera expanded its recall of  Frontera Texas Original Taco Skillet Sauce for undeclared soy to include an additional 1,314 (8 oz.) packages.

Dietary Supplements

Iowa Select Herbs recalled dietary supplements for misbranding, unapproved new drugs, and adulterated dietary supplements. The recalled products include Acerola Berry (Malpighia) in 4 fluid ounce containers, with lot number 32796 and expiration date 04/2019. Also recalled is Acia Berry (Euterpe oleracea) in 4 ounce containers with lot number 22345 and expiration date 05/2017.

Alfalfa Leaf in 7.5 ounce containers is also recalled, with lot number 30464 and expiration date 02/2019. Alisma Leaf in 1 gallon containers is recalled, with lot number 130601H040 and expiration date 02/2019. Aloe Vera Juice in 4 fluid ounce containers is recalled, with lot number m10752 and expiration date 11/2016
