Vitakraft Sun Seed Recalls Rabbit & Macaw Diets for Listeria

Vitacraft Sun Seed is voluntarily recalling some Sunseed Parrot and Rabbit foods for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Household pets such as birds and rabbits can become carriers of this pathogenic bacteria even if they don’t appear to be sick. They can transfer the bacteria to the environment and thus pose a risk to people.

The company’s supplier of dried apples notified them that that ingredient could be contaminated. There have been no reports of illness to date. You can see the long list of recalled products, along with the item numbers, lot numbers, pictures of product labels, and best by dates at the FDA web site. The recalled products include SS Sensations Rabbit Food, MJR Parrot Food, NG Guinea Pig Entree, and DFS Premium Blend Macaw, among others.

If you purchased these foods, do not feed them to your pet. Throw them away in a sealed package or take them back to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Wash your hands well after handling this product, and clean out the area where you stored it with a mild bleach solution to kill bacteria. These products were sold in Arizona, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
