Sprout Creek Farm Recalls Raw Milk Kinkead Cheese For Possible Listeria

Sprout Creek Farm of Poughkeepsie, New York is recalling 4 wheels of raw milk “Kinkead” cheese that was made on May 10, 2018 because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. No illnesses have been reported to the company to date.

The recalled batch of raw milk Kinkead cheese was distributed to these locations: Adams Fairacre Farms at 160 OldPost Road in Wappingers Falls, New York; Rocking Horse Ranch at 600 US-44 in Highland, New York; Mountain Brauhaus at 3123 US-44 in Gardiner, New York; Online Order at 2003 Avondale inWichita Falls, Texas; and The Amsterdam at 6380 Mill Street in Rhinebeck, New York. Raw milk Kinkead is a semi-firm, washed natural rind cheese. Packages of the cheese have an orange label. Some of the recalled cheese was cut and sold by weight in the stores listed above.

The issue was discovered as Sprout Creek Farm was trying to find the cause of the Listeria monocytogenes contamination that was discovered during routine testing. The farm’s aging caves are being tested because the pathogenic bacteria may be present in the environment.

Sprout Creek Farm voluntarily ceased all production of cheese after their earlier recall of “Margie” cheese that was issued on November 6, 2018. This recalled batch of Kinkead c cheese was distributed before the November 6 recall.

If you bought this cheese, do not eat it, even if you are going to cook with it. Throw it away after wrapping it in plastic wrap or foil. You can also take the cheese back to the place of purchase for a refund.

Then clean out your refrigerator with a solution of 1 gallon warm water to 1 tablespoon liquid chlorine bleach. Listeria can be persistent and can take some effort to eradicate. The bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures. Freezing doesn’t kill it.

If you ate this cheese, watch for symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days. Symptoms include stiff neck, high fever, muscle aches, headache, nausea, and diarrhea. If you do feel sick, especially if you are pregnant or in a high risk group, see your doctor.
