Gills Diced Onions Recalled For Salmonella in Outbreak Investigation

Gills diced onions are being recalled in relation to the FDA’s investigation into a possible Salmonella outbreak. The recall notice states, “The FDA notified [the company] that the recalled products were part of the agency’s traceback investigation into an ongoing Salmonella Thompson outbreak.” There is a Salmonella Thompson outbreak on the FDA’s CORE Outbreak Investigation Table that has sickened at least 72 people. So far, the FDA has not officially named a product for that outbreak. The recalling firm is Gills Onions of Oxnard, California.

These onions are well beyond their use by dates, which are all in August 2023, and are no longer available for purchase. But consumers may have them frozen as an ingredient in casseroles or soups. You can see the use by dates and lot codes and where they were sold at the FDA web site. These recalled onions were produced on the same day and on the same production lines as the onions that tested positive for the pathogen.

The recalled onions were sold in these states: Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington in several sizes through various grocery stores. The recalled products include Gills diced yellow onions in 3 pound bags with UPC number 643550000320 that were sold in California through Smart & Final stores, in Arizona and California thorough Bashas Markets and Smart & Final stores, and in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana through Smart & Final and CHEF’STORE.

Also recalled is Gills diced yellow onions sold in 8 ounce cups with UPC number 643550000658. That product was sold in Arizona and California at Bashas Markets, Smart & Final, and Stater Bros stores, in California at Stater Bros stores, and in California at Smart & Final and Stater Bros stores.  Also recalled is Gills Onions diced celery and onions in 8 ounce cups with UPC number 643550000696. It was sold in Arizona and California at Bashas Markets, Smart & Final, and Stater Bros stores.

Gills diced mirepoix in 10 ounce cups, with UPC number 643550000788 is also recalled. It was sold in California at Smart & Final stores. Finally, Gills 8 ounce cups of diced red onions are recalled. The UPC number for that product is 643550000641. It was sold in California at Stater Bros and Smart & Final stores, and in Arizona and California at Bashas Markets, Smart & Final, and Stater Bros stores.

The UPC number alone does not identify the recalled onions. The UPC number, brand name, and expiration dates together identify the recalled products.

Please check your freezer to see if you have any of these onions. If you  do, do not eat them. Throw the product away in a secure trash can. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling the onions. If you ate any of these onions and have been ill with the symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning, see your doctor.
