There have been many recalls for different brands of these types of products since April 20017. No illnesses have been reported with the consumption of these specific products, but there is an E. coli outbreak in Canada associated with recalled flour. The recalled items are from Harlan Bakeries - Edmonton. They were sold nationally at the retail level. Smucker Foods of Canada Recalls Flour for E. coli O121
Smucker Foods of Canada is voluntarily recalling some production codes of Golden Temple, Swad, and Maya flour products sold in the U.S. for possible E. coli O121 contamination. These products were made by Ardent Mills in Saskatchewan, Canada. The products are all packaged in 20 pound paper bags and were distributed nationwide to 19 distributors and two small retailers. New E. coli Outbreak in Canada Associated with Flour
The British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) has issued an alert about a new outbreak of E. coli O121 associated with flour. Six people in that province were infected with the same strain of E. coli O121 between February and April, 2017. A sample of flour from one of the ill person's home was tested by the BCCDC Public Health Laboratory. The flour tested positive for the same strain of E. coli O121 in all the illnesses. Public health officials do not know if all of the patients consumed the same flour. E. coli O121 Outbreak in Canada Linked to Flour Grows to 28 Cases
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has updated their investigation into the E. coli O121 outbreak linked to flours and flour products. There are now 28 people sick in that outbreak. The case count by province is: British Columbia (12), Saskatchewan (4), Alberta (5), Ontario (1) and Newfoundland and Labrador (5). One of the 28 cases was a visitor to Canada. The illness onset dates range from November 2016 to March 2017. Seven individuals have been hospitalized. These patients have recovered or are recovering. No deaths have been reported. The average age of ill individuals is 24 years. There have been several recalls linked to this outbreak; all of the flours and flour products are produced by Ardent Mills.
