Listeria Outbreak Associated With Pasteurized Chocolate Milk

Usually, when we write about an outbreak associated with milk, the product in question is raw, or unpasteurized, milk. But in the CDC's Emerging Infectious Diseases issue for March 2019, a Listeria monocytogenes outbreak associated with pasteurized chocolate milk in Ontario, Canada is the subject. That outbreak took place from November 2015 through June 2016. The article states that listeriosis outbreak associated with pasteurized milk are rare in North America, but, like all foods, dairy products can be contaminated with pathogens after pasteurization. A study conducted in the U.S. reviewed 83 fluid milk-associated outbreaks from 1990 to 2006; only one was attributed to Listeria monocytogenes. Sprout Creek Farm Margie Cheese Recalled For Improper Pasteurization

According to news reports, the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets states that a Sprout Creek Farm cows milk cheese called Margie is being voluntarily recalled for improper pasteurization. Pasteurization heats the milk used to make cheese to a temperature high enough to kill any pathogenic bacteria that may be present. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this issue. The recalled cow's milk cheese is called Margie, with a Make Date of August 28, 2018 and a Best By Date of November 12, 2018. Improperly Pasteurized Milk Recalled in New York State

The New York State Agriculture Commissioner told consumers that 1% low fat milk produced by Mountain Fresh Dairy in Binghamton, New York is being recalled for improper pasteurization. The notice states, "Proper pasteurization heats milk in order to effectively eliminate all pathogenic bacteria, such as Listeria and Salmonella." No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem. The recalled 1% low fat milk was sold at three non profit grocery stores in New Jersey (NPGS). The locations are: 2080 West County Line Road, Jackson, New Jersey; 231 Main Street, Lakewood, New Jersey; and 152 James Street, Lakewood, New Jersey. Westby Cottage Cheese Retrieved for Improper Pasteurization

Last week, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture issued a consumer alert for 4% cottage cheese made by Westby Cooperative Creamery for possible improper pasteurization. Now they are issuing a "voluntary product retrieval notice" which is basically a recall. The product was manufactured and packaged on August 17, 2016, and possibly sold to consumers on or before August 26, 2016. The cottage cheese is packaged in 16 ounce, 22 ounce, and 24 ounce containers, under the brand names of Westby, Food Club, Oberweis, and Shurfine. The containers are marked with Lot Code 10-6-16 cc, and Plant #55-372. About 700 cases of the product, with 12 containers per case, were distributed in Wisconsin and to a distribution center in Aurora, Illinois. Wisconsin Ag Issues Consumer Alert for Westby Cottage Cheese

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture has issued a consumer alert for 4% cottage cheese made by Westby Cooperative Creamery because it may not be properly pasteurized. Consumers who purchased the product should not eat it as it may contain bacteria that could cause illness.located in Westby, Wisconsin. The presence of active alkaline phosphatase was discovered in samples during routine testing and may indicate that the product was not adequately pasteurized. Chocolate goat milk is being recalled in New York for improper pasteurization. Pasteurization kills bacteria that are naturally present in the milk of ruminant animals. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of this product. The recalled product is Edgwxick Farm Chocolate Goat Milk. It is sold in half-gallon plastic containers. Flying Cow Creamery Yogurt Recalled for Improper Pasteurization

Flying Cow Creamery of Rochester, Washington is recalling one lot of its whole milk yogurt for improper pasteurization. Inspection by the Washington State Department of Agriculture found that time and temperature recordings were not made while that lot was being pasteurized. There is no record of proper pasteurization of the product. >The recalled product is Flying Cow Creamery Whole Milk Yogurt in 32 ounce glass jars with a white lid. The batch number is 70. Sunny Pine Farm Recalls Chèvre Cheese for Improper Pasteurization

Sunny Pine Farm of Washington is recalling organic Chèvre cheese (goat cheese) because of possible improper pasteurization. Pasteurization heats milk used to make the cheese to effectively kill all disease-causing bacteria such as Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella. The Farm "does not know of any illness or complaints associated with the recalled cheese". The cheeses are Organic Chèvre, Organic Parsley Chive Chèvre, and Organic Honey Lavender Chèvre.
