Belleville Farmer’s Market Recalls Walnuts for Possible Listeria

Belleville Farmer’s Market of Belleville, Illinois is recalling Shelled Walnuts because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The nuts were distributed in Belleville retail stores. No reports of illnesses related to the consumption of this product have been received to date.

Recall SignageThe recalled product is in an 8 ounce, clear plastic package marked with a Farmer’s Market label indicating pack dates from March 2014 through May 2014. The recall was initiated after FDA sampling detected Listeria monocytogenes in walnuts sampled from a supplier. All walnuts processed in the supplier’s facility during the same time period as the product that tested positive for the pathogenic bacteria are being recalled.

If you purchased this product, do not eat it. Discard or return to the place of purchase at 1901 N. Belt West for a full refund.

If you ate any of these nuts, monitor yourself for theĀ symptoms of listeriosis, the illness caused by the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, for the next 70 days. Those symptoms include muscle aches, flu-like symptoms, fever, upset stomach, diarrhea, stiff neck, headache, loss of balance, confusion, or convulsions. Pregnant women are especially susceptible to this disease. Those women may only have a mild illness, but listeriosis can cause stillbirth and miscarriage. If you do become ill, see your doctor as soon as possible and tell him you ate some of this recalled product.
