Target, Petco, Sam’s Club and Costco are all recalling dog treats made by Kasel Associates Industries Inc. of Denver for possible Salmonella contamination. Some dogs have become ill after eating these treats.
This is the third time in 10 months that a problem has been detected at Kasel. In December, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a consumer warning after company refused to issue a recall for dog treats tainted with Salmonella.
The current recall covers all products manufactured by Kasel between April 20, 2012 and September 19, 2012. These products were sold under a variety of brand names including Boots & Barkley, BIXBI, Colorado Naturals, K9, Nature’s Deli, Petco, and TDBBS/Best Bully Sticks. Some of these products have shelf lives of up to two years so consumers should check recall information, listed below, before serving treats to their dogs.
This recall was issued after a problem was discovered by the Colorado Department of Agriculture and all tests performed by the FDA on finished products and more than half of environmental swabs taken at the Kasel facility were positive for Salmonella. “More than ten different species of Salmonella were found in the firm’s products and manufacturing facility, indicating multiple sources of contamination,” according to the FDA.
Contact with tainted pet food can cause illness in humans. In 2007 and 2012, contaminated dog food caused multi-state Salmonella outbreaks of human illness. At this time, no human illnesses have been reported in conjunction with these dog treats. (Pecto customers should note that the initial recall information on the Petco Scoop incorrectly states no illnesses have been reported. Although human illness has not been reported in association with the recall, illnesses in dogs have been reported, according to the FDA.) Hand washing after feeding your dog or giving him or her a treat is the best way consumers can avoid illness.
Although some of the recalled products are chicken jerky treats, none of the products under recall was made in China and are not related to the FDA’s investigation of tainted jerky treats from that country. All of the products in this recall were made in the United States.
A dog who has a Salmonella infection may become lethargic, have a fever, vomit, have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea. Or, he or she may have a decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected pets can be a source of illness to humans. Consumers who have purchased these products should watch human and canine family members for signs of illness.
