Whole Foods Market is the latest in a string of companies to announce a salmon recall for possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The product under recall is Whole Catch Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon in 4 oz packages. It was sold cold smoked and sliced in Whole Foods stores in 12 states: Clorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island, and Utah.
The recalled salmon was sold in black-and-gold, flat, rectangular vacuum-sealed packages. The lot code, ink-jet printed on the the upper left side of the back of the package, is 7425A2298B. The UPC code is 0 99482 40880 0. Signage is posted in Whole Foods Market stores to notify customers of this recall.
No illnesses have been reported in association with this recall. But Listeria can cause serious, sometimes fatal injury. Consumers who have purchased this product should not eat it. Symptoms of Listeria infection, called listeriosis, can take as long as two months after exposure to develop and include: fever, stiff neck, headaches, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Among pregnant women, Listeriosis can cause miscarriages and stillbirths. Young children, seniors and others with weakened immune systems are also at special risk.
There has been a string of recalls for salmon possibly contaminated with Listeria. Anyone who has eaten these products and develops symptoms should see a health care provider.
