Blumen Hand Sanitizer Recalled For Undeclared Methanol

4e Brands North America is voluntarily recalling ten bottle sizes of Blumen hand sanitizers to the consumer level because they may contain methanol, or wood alcohol, that is not declared on the label. Wood alcohol is toxic and can be absorbed through the skin. Drinking methanol can cause serious injury and death. There have not been any reports of adverse events related to the use of this product.

Substantial methanol exposure can cause nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death. Although all persons using these products on their hands are at risk, young children who accidentally ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute, are most at risk for methanol poisoning.

This product is used as hand sanitizer and is marketed to help reduce bacteria on the skin when soap and water aren’t available. The Blumen Hand Sanitizer is packaged in clear plastic bottles.

The recalled products include Blumen Advanced Instant Hand Sanitizer Clear in 33.8 ounce fluid ounce/1 liter bottles, with UPC number 814266023747. Also recalled is Blumen Advanced Hand Sanitizer in 7.5 ounce bottles with UPC number 814266023624, and in 33.8 ounce size with UPC number 814266023693. Blumen Clear LEAR Advanced Hand Sanitizer is recalled, in 18 ounce size with UPC number 814266023914 and in 2 ounce size with UPC number 814266023716.

Blumen Clear Advanced Hand Sanitizer is recalled, sold in 7.5 ounce containers with UPC number 814266023624; in 17 ounce size with UPC number 814266023096; in 1.05 gallon containers with UPC number 814266023686; and in 3.4 ounce containers with UPC number 814266023594. Finally, Blumen Aloe Advanced Hand Sanitizer with 70 Alcohol is recalled; that product is sold in 3.4 ounce packages with UPC number 814266023587. Each of those recalled products has many lot numbers; you can see those at the FDA web site.

If you purchased any of these products, do not use them. Throw them away according to your area’s hazardous waste disposal system or take them back to the store where you purchased them for a full refund.

Notice: This recall has been updated to include all hand sanitizer products produced by 4e within the expiration date, “regardless of size, UPC number, or lot number.” You can see the list of recalled products along with the package size and UPC number at the FDA web site.

I have a bottle of the UPC 814266023747, 33.8 oz. I used about a 1/4 of the bottle. Purchased it from Shoprite.
Do I need to go to the doctor and get checked out?

  3. Rosenda rivera says

now that this was poison and people who bought it like myself, who felt dizzy and nauseus the 1-2 time s I used it. I never made the connection, I thought i was just feeling bad. What do we do now. What are the long term risks?

  4. Blueman product Hand sanitizer they are also selling it in Puerto Rico , My mom lives in Dorado Puerto Rico and she showed me the bottle of Bluman That she bought , Are you guys also making the recall for this product in PR as well? I Live in Florida I am Just concerned because of my family in Puerto Rico and other people , thank you.

    • Linda Larsen says

I haven’t heard of a recall for Puerto Rico, but if the UPC numbers and other identifying numbers are the same, including the bottle size, it may be recalled. We aren’t recalling it, but the FDA has posted the notice from the company. It’s probably best to contact the company and ask. Thanks for letting us know.

  5. KATHY Bernstein says

I bought mine in BJ’s. Blumen Clear Advanced Hand Sanitizer, extra soft. I am told I have to go to a site to enter lot number and UPC numbers. Can’t find the site to get my refund.
    Lot No. L 2447
    UPC 8 14266 02409 6

  6. donna rojas says

I have two bottles with upc code 8 14266023747. I bought them in shoprite grocery store…What do I do with then, I don’t have a receipt anymore and they were like 20 or 25 each..

    • Linda Larsen says

That is a recalled UPC number. Take them back to the store and hopefully they will accept the return even without the receipt. If not, show them the recall notice on your phone and talk to the manager. That’s a lot of money!

      • Nayma Siddiqua says

I bought 4 bottles of the big ones from BJS

      • Stephanie Brown says

Well that’s just great my bottle is almost empty and I used it at my store for like tons of customers and myself since May!

    • Carol Mielke says

I took mine back to shop-rite today. No questions asked, they gave me a full refund.

  7. Shirley McBride says

I have one that has the same upc number on it 814266023747 that I got from Sam’s. They do not show recalling this one. Does it need to go back?

    • Linda Larsen says

If it isn’t on the recall list I don’t know if they will take it back; you sure could try. Since recalls are expanded all the time, and since methanol is so toxic, if it were me I’d take it back.

    • Gary Wike says

If you look above that one is on the list. I have the same bottle

  8. If I purchased the 18oz Blumen Hand Sanitizer UPC 814266023914 Lot #1859 – can I assume this lot was produced according the standards and does not contain dangerous level of methanol? For clarification, can you confirm the Lot # is identified with a stamp which includes the expiration date?

    • Linda Larsen says

If you have the hand sanitizer in 18 ounce size with UPC number 814266023914 but a different lot number it is not recalled as far as I know. Take a look at the FDA recall page to be sure. Still, recalls are often updated with more information and more products recalled so things may change.

  9. Joe Simonds says

My UPC code is 814266024096 is this a recalled product ?

    • Linda Larsen says

It doesn’t look like it. But recalls are updated often. If it were me I wouldn’t risk it and would get rid of the sanitizer.

    • I have 3 bottles of bluemensinitizer upc 814266024095

    • Barbara M Conklin says

The 17 oz. 814266024096 is on the recall list. 5th paragraph, 2nd line.

      • ALLYN BAMBERGER says

Thanks, Barbara. I wasn’t able to find the right UPC code until you found it on the FDA’s list. I will contact BJ’s right now, and they’d better take it back. I have 3 bottles of the stuff. I haven’t used it much since I didn’t like the feel of it on my hands.

  10. Virginia Angier says

I have 6 bottles with the same upc code. The cost of these totaled $30.00
I can’t seem to find a form to fill out and any info on more recalls of this brand.
bj’s whoelsale won’t take this back which is not right. It was purchased there and they have our money. I am sure they are insured to recoup recalled product monies.
Help with this would be appreciated

    • Linda Larsen says

If you go to the recall page on the FDA site (link in the article), you will see an email for the company. You can contact them and hopefully get some help.

  11. Jim Kennedy says

I have experienced headaches for three days while using Blumen hand sanitizer. I couldn’t understand why I am getting headaches to the point I carry Tylenol with me. I am very concerned this may be a result from the use of Blumen Hand Sanitizer.

    • Linda Larsen says

I’m sorry this happened. Please contact your doctor, and then report your problem to the FDA through their MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting System.

    • Steve Merkel says

Was your specific lot number included in the recall? I have a bottle and the lot number is not included but I don’t know if I should trust that it is safe.
