Dog Deaths Prompt Petco to Dump Treats Made in China

Petco has become the first national pet specialty retailer to end sales of pet treats made in China. The decision was prompted by continuing reports of illness and deaths associated with the products. Between 2007 an 2014, at least 5,600 dogs illnesses and 1,000 dog deaths were reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The chicken, duck, or sweet potato jerky treats have also sickened 24 cats, and three people. Jump Your Bones Roo Bites Dog Treats Recalled For Salmonella

Jump Your Bones Inc. of Boca Raton, Florida is recalling Jump Your Bones brand name Roo Bites dog treats because of potential Salmonella contamination. At the time of the recall, there had been no reports of illness. Salmonella on the treats can sicken dogs who eat the them and the humans who handle them, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products. Symptoms of a Salmonella infection in humans include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. In a small percentage of cases, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Target, Petco, Sam’s Club, Costco Recall Dog Treats For Salmonella

Target, Petco, Sam’s Club and Costco are all recalling dog treats made by Kasel Associates Industries Inc. of Denver for possible Salmonella contamination. Some dogs have become ill after eating these treats. This is the third time in 10 months that a problem has been detected at Kasel. In December, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a consumer warning after company refused to issue a recall for dog treats tainted with Salmonella. The current recall covers all products manufactured by Kasel between April 20, 2012 and September 19, 2012. These products were sold under a variety of brand names including Boots & Barkley, BIXBI, Colorado Naturals, K9, Nature’s Deli, Petco, and TDBBS/Best Bully Sticks. Company Refuses To Recall Salmonella Dog Treats

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to feed their dogs certain Nature’s Deli Chicken Jerky Dog Treats because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. The affected products are packaged and distributed by Kasel Associates Industries Inc., of Denver, Colorado which has declined to perform a voluntary recall at this time. On October 2, 2012, Kasel issued a recall for one lot of  Nature’s Deli Chicken Jerky Dog Treats, but that recall does not cover the products now in question. In November 2012, the Colorado Department of Agriculture found Salmonella in a retail sample taken from Nature’s Deli Chicken Jerky Dog Treats with lot code BESTBY061913DEN on the back side of the package in the transparent section immediately following the term “All American … [Read more...]
