Jeni’s Ice Cream: You Fight Listeria By Constantly Searching For It

Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream has posted on its website a response to an FDA warning letter made public this week.  The letter states environmental samples taken near food and food contact surfaces during an inspection in January and February of this year were positive for Listeria. The inspection was part of a follow-up process after a Listeria recall in 2015.  Jeni's issued a recall for all of its products and temporarily ceased production in April 2015 after the Nebraska Department of Agriculture found Listeria in ice cream it tested as part of a routine product sampling program. FDA Found Listeria Monocytogenes at Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream

The FDA sent a warning letter to Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream's frozen flavor base Ohio manufacturing facility on August 9, 2016. The inspection that prompted the letter took place on January 25, 2016 through February 9, 2016. That letter states that "your frozen flavor base products are adulterated" because "FDA laboratory analysis of the environmental swabs found the presence of Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes), a human pathogen, in your facility. " A recall of Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams was initiated for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination in April, 2015. Jeni’s Ice Cream Finds Listeria in Ohio Facility

Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams recalled all of their products last month after Listeria monocytogenes bacteria was found in the ice cream made in their Nebraska plant. More than 265 tons of ice cream was destroyed.  They shut down production and cleaned the facility, then reopened. But testing found more of the pathogenic bacteria in the Columbus,Ohio kitchen. Routine swabbing discovered the problem. Production has been halted again as the company investigates. All of their ice cream is now subject to test-and-hold before it enters into commerce. The company is temporarily closing its scoop shops because they don't have enough ice cream. FDA 483 Report on Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams

The FDA has released Form 483 about their inspection of Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams facility in Columbus, Ohio. That firm recalled all of their products in April 2015 because Listeria monocytogenes was found in the ice cream. The report states that the Regulatory manager and the Director of Operations, who are responsible for assuring compliance with current good manufacturing practices to all personnel, demonstrated a lack of competency. Details of 2008 Inspection Report at Jeni’s Ice Cream Facility

The FDA has released two inspection reports on Jeni's Ice Cream facility in Missouri. A 2008 report found problems, as did a 2015 report. The Missouri Department of Agriculture found Listeria monocytogenes bacteria in Jeni's ice cream in April 2015, and the plant shut down to find the problem. The 2008 report found that plant managers did not take measures to exclude pests from the processing areas. Rodent pellets were found along the oven wall, in the dry food product storage area, and throughout the storage area. A live rodent on a glue trap was found next to the cleaning supply door. After Listeria Recall, Jeni’s Ice Cream Shops to Reopen Tonight

After addressing food safety violations that likely contributed to a Listeria recall, Jeni's ice cream shops reopen tonight. On April 23, the company issued a voluntary recall of all of its products after Listeria was found in a pint of dark chocolate ice cream in mid-April. No illnesses had been associated with Jeni's products, but the company issued the recall and stopped production while it tried to isolate the source of the problem and correct it. Jeni’s Up-Front About $2.5 Million Listeria Recall

Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream is keeping cutomers informed and employees partially compensated as it grapples with a $2.5 million Listeria recall. After Listeria was found in a pint of dark chocolate ice cream last week, The company's CEO John Lowe has been posting updates on the company's website. At the time of the recall, no illnesses had been reported in association with the products, but the recall comes at a time when ice cream made by another company, Blue Bell, has. In mid-March, After Listeria in its ice cream was linked to illnesses and deaths, Blue Bell recalled some of its ice cream and then expanded the recall, twice.
