FDA: Blue Bell Ice Cream Linked to Listeria Outbreak Made in Texas

Rare strains of Listeria cultured from five patients at Via Christi hospital in Wichita were also found in several flavors of ice cream made at Blue Bell Creameries' Brenham, Texas facility, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Between January 2014 and January 2015, Listeria sickened five Via Christi patients who ate Blue Bell ice cream they were served while hospitalized for unrelated illnesses. Three of them died. Listeria In Blue Bell Ice Cream Kills 3 Sickens 2 More at Via Christi Hospital in Wichita

A Listeria outbreak linked to Blue Bell ice cream served to patients at Via Christi Hospital in Wichita has killed three people and sickened two others, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Between January 2014 and January 2015, five patients hospitalized for unrelated causes all contracted listeriosis. Four of those sickened were able to provide a food history and all of them reported having milkshakes made with Blue Bell “Scoops,” a single serving product, while they were in the hospital. Cultures from those patients were positive for four strains of Listeria. Full Tilt Ice Cream Recalled for Potential Listeria

Full Tilt Ice Cream of Seattle is recalling all of its dairy-based ice creams due to potential Listeria contamination. These dairy base for these ice cream products was produced by Snoqualmie Gourmet Ice Cream Inc. where Listeria was detected during an inspection by health officials. Full Tilt representatives say the company has since performed a rigorous sanitation schedule to prevent further contamination. Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, seniors, those with compromised immune systems. Among pregnant women it can cause miscarriages and stillbirths. Listeria Outbreak Prompts Recall of All Snoqualmie Ice Cream Produced in 2014

Listeria illnesses have prompted a recall of Snoqualmie, Emerald & Spruce, and Top Pot ice cream products sold at Safeway, QFC, Fred Meyer, Whole Foods, PCC, Bartell Drugs, Metropolitan Market and Albertsons. The recall includes all ice cream, gelato, custard and sorbet produced during 2014. Customers who have purchased Snoqualmie, Emerald & Spruce or Top Poot ice cream products during 2014 including ice cream, gelato, custard and sorbet should not eat them. Health officials have matched the Listeria strain found at the manufacturing facility and in the product to the strain found in the two people who became ill.
