Three Brand Names Associated With Problematic Dog Treats

News sources are reporting that three names are associated with the chicken jerky treats that are apparently sickening and killing some dogs. The FDA has logged complaints from vets and pet owners. Three brands are mentioned in the so-called "Priority 1" cases, where the animal was under the age of 11 and medical records were provided: Waggin' Train jerky treats or tenders produced by Nestle Purina PetCare Co. Canyon Creek Ranch jerky treats or tenders, produced by Nestle Purina PetCare Co. Milto's Kitchen Home-style Dog Treats, produced by Del Monte Corp. Both companies say their treats are safe. The FDA issued a cautionary warning about those products in September 2007, and a Preliminary Animal Health Notification in December 2008. The number of complaints from pet owners decreased, but in 2011 the complaints rose again. In fact, there have been more than 600 reports of illness in the last few months. Those products are intended for a treat only, and are not a substitute for a balanced diet. If you feed your dog chicken jerky products, watch for signs of a Fanconi syndrome-like illness: Decreased appetite Decreased activity level vomiting diarrhea, sometimes bloody Increased water … [Read more...]
