The Broome County Jail kitchen had food safety violations before the Salmonella outbreak that sickened more than 300 inmates occurred, according to news reports. Ten inmates were hospitalized, but eight of them have been released. The rest recovered without medical attention. Allegedly it was the chicken salad that was the source of the pathogen; it did test positive for Salmonella. Olivia Catalino, director of public health, said in a statement, "Our team observed numerous instances of potentially hazardous food that were improperly refrigerated. The Broome County jail Salmonella outbreak may be chicken salad, according to news reports. The Sheriff, Fred Akahar, held a news conference on June 1, 2026 and stated that the source may have bee4n identified. Out of the 450 inmates at the jail, 320 of them got sick with Salmonella infections. Traceback conducted by the Broome County Health Department may have found the problem. Most of the inmates were interviewed and were asked questions about how long they had been ill and what foods they ate. Ten of those patients were hospitalized. A Broome County jail Salmonella outbreak has sickened at least 300 inmates, according to a press release issued by the Broome County Sheriff's Office. On Monday, May 25, 2026, incarcerated people at the correctional facility started having symptoms of nausea's vomiting, diarrhea, and headaches. The facility is located in Dickinson, New York. Initially, officials thought that the outbreak was caused by norovirus, but test results that came back on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 showed that the outbreak was caused by Salmonella bacteria. Correctional Facility medical and housing staff are treating and assisting those experiencing symptoms and preventing dehydration.
