Large Proportion of Minnesota Residents Sickened in Del Monte Cyclospora Outbreak; Lawsuits Filed

The huge Del Monte Cyclospora outbreak has sickened 212 people in four states. Of those patients, at least 54 live in Minnesota. The last update posted by the FDA was on July 5, 2018. Attorney Fred Pritzker, who is representing many of those sickened in this outbreak and has filed several lawsuits, said, "There are many Kwik Trip facilities, where many of the Del Monte products were sold, in Minnesota and in Wisconsin, where more than 100 people are sick. We expect that this Del Monte cyclospora outbreak will probably grow, since there is a time lag from when a person gets sick and they visit their doctor and are diagnosed with this parasitic infection." Consumers in Wisconsin have been hit hard in the Cyclospora Del Monte outbreak that is linked to recalled vegetable trays. Of the 212 people sickened in this outbreak so far as of July 5, 2018, 152 patients live in Wisconsin. Noted food safety attorney Fred Pritzker, who is representing many clients in this outbreak, said, "This outbreak will likely grow simply because there were so many of these products sold. And there is a time difference between when a person starts fo feel sick, they go to a doctor, are diagnosed (which can take some time since tests for this illness are not routine), and the illness is reported to public health officials." Will the Del Monte Cyclospora outbreak that has sickened at least 212 people, mostly in Minnesota and Wisconsin this summer, continue to grow? A cyclospora outbreak in Texas has sickened at least 56 people, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. "This Texas cyclospora outbreak happens every year," said attorney Fred Pritzker. "There were hundreds of cases of cyclosporiasis last year in Texas and in the years before." Cyclosporiasis is caused by the cyclospora parasite. This parasite is ingested when contaminated water containing the sporulated organism gets onto fresh produce. When a person is infected, the parasite causes symptoms including explosive and watery diarrhea, cramps, bloating, gas, nausea, weight loss, and vomiting. The Del Monte Cyclospora Kwik Trip outbreak has grown to include 185 people sick, according to the FDA. That number is current as of June 28, 2018; all cases are lab-confirmed. The ill persons live in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Seven people have been hospitalized. These illnesses are associated with recalled Del Monte 6 ounce and 12 ounce vegetable trays containing broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, and dill dip sold by Kwik Trip/Kwik Star locations in Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Six people have been hospitalized in this outbreak because they are so sick. The patient case count by state is: Iowa (4), Michigan (2), Minnesota (32), and Wisconsin (106). The illness onset date range is from May 14, 2018 to June 8, 2018. The patient age range is from 20 to 79 years. This product was recalled on June 8, 2018. A Del Monte Lawsuit was filed in the cyclospora outbreak linked to vegetable trays sold at Kwik Trip locations and other stores across the Midwest by lawyers at Pritzker Hageman. Their client is a man from the Wisconsin Rapids area. The plaintiff bought two Del Monte vegetable trays from a Kwik Trip in Green Bay, Wisconsin in late May 2018. He soon started suffering from nausea, stomach pain, headache, and diarrhea. These products are linked to a multistate cyclospora outbreak that has sickened at least 78 people in four states.
