Meat Allergies Associated With Tick Bites Are Increasing

The CDC is reporting that meat allergies associated with tick bites are increasing. There are more than 110,000 suspected cases of alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) that have been identified in association with tick bites. But because this diagnosis needs a positive test and a clinical exam, and some people are not teated, the government is estimating that there may be as many as 450,000 Americans affected by AGS. AGS is a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. It is also known as the tick bite meat allergy or the red-meat allergy. Knowledge about this reaction is low. May is Food Allergy Action Month. The FD is offering tips to consumers to help them protect themselves about food allergies, which can be deadly. The FDA makes sure that labels on foods are accurate and have complete information about the eight food groups that cause 90% of the serious allergic reactions to food. Those eight foods include milk, eggs, fish, shellfish (such as crab, lobsters and shrimp), tree nuts (such as almonds, walnuts, and pecans), peanuts, wheat, and soybeans. Whole Foods Recalls Cookie Platters for Undeclared Nuts

Whole Foods Market is recalling its Assorted Cookie Platters, All Sizes because they contain undeclared nuts, one of the major food allergens. They were sold in Whole Foods Market stores in Arizona, southern California, Hawaii, and Nevada. One illness has been reported. The platters are round, clear, plastic containers with a black plastic base and Whole Foods Market label beginning November 24, 2014. The "Cookie Platter Small" has PLU #243868 and sell by dates up to January 7, 2015; the "Cookie Platter Medium" has PLU #243873 and sell by dates up to January 7, 2015; and the "Cookie Platter Large" has PLU #247661 and sell by dates up to January 7, 2015. Go Max Go Withdraws Candy Bars Due to a Labeling Issue

It actually contains vanilla pudding that uses milk, one of the major food allergens, as an ingredient which is not declared on the label. The GFS Lemon Pudding was sold in 113 ounce cans with UPC number 9390110676 and Lot # 3T12354C printed on the end of the can.
