CDC: Flour From General Mills KC Plant is Likely E. coli Outbreak Source

Flour produced at a General Mills plant in Kansas City, Mo.  is the likely source of a 20-state E. coli O121 outbreak, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The outbreak, which hospitalized 10 people, triggered a 10 million-pound recall. The recalled flours were sold under the brand names Gold Medal Flour, Gold Medal Wondra Flour, and Signature Kitchens Flour. Consumers who have purchased these products should not use them as E. coli can cause serious illness and death. General Mills E. coli Outbreak Includes Three Minnesota Cases

The General Mills E. coli outbreak includes three illnesses in Minnesota. Two adults and one child were sickened between January and March, according to a Minnesota Department of Health spokesman. All three have recovered. One of the adults became ill in January, the other adult and the child were sickened in March. None of them required hospitalization. The outbreak includes 38 people in 20 states who were sickened by E. coli O121 between December 21, 2015, and May 3, 2016. General Mills Will Sustainably Source Top 10 Ingredients by 2020

General Mills of  Minneapolis will sustainably source 100 percent of its 10 priority ingredients by 2020, the company announced this week.  Those 10 ingredients, which include oats, wheat, corn, dairy, fiber packaging, cocoa, vanilla, palm oil, sugar cane and sugar beets, represent 50 percent of General Mills' total raw material purchases. "As a food company, we know that the vitality of our business depends upon access to high-quality ingredients," said Jerry Lynch, vice president and chief sustainability officer at General Mills.
