Study Looks at Hepatitis E Contamination in Pigs

A new study published in the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Emerging Infectious Diseases looks at the prevalence of hepatitis E contamination in pigs used for food in the United States. The hepatitis E virus RNA was found in 6.3% of serum samples from market-weight pigs at 25 slaughterhouses in 10 states. The blood of these pigs may contaminate the pork supply chains in this country, according to the study. Hepatitis E does not get a lot of attention in the U.S., certainly not in comparison to hepatitis A. It is a self-limiting disease that doesn't cause chronic infection. In Canada, Hepatitis Frozen Berry Outbreak Hospitalizes 5

A Hepatitis A outbreak linked to frozen berries has sickened 13 people in Canada, hospitalizing five of them, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada. A recall has been issued for Nature's Touch Organic Berry Cherry Blend sold at Costco stores inOntario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador. Consumers who have purchased this product should not consume it. Hepatitis A  is a highly contagious virus. OxyElite Pro Lawsuit Filed in Hawaii Seeks Compensation For Acute Hepatitis, Liver Disease

This week, a lawsuit was filed in Hawaii on behalf of a woman (the plaintiff) who used OxyElite Pro and subsequently suffered acute hepatitis and liver injury. The lawsuit alleges that the plaintiff consumed OxyElite Pro for several months before she began experiencing symptoms of hepatitis infection in March 2013. These symptoms included abdominal pain, nausea, fatigue and muscle aches.  She went undiagnosed until August of 2013, when she was hospitalized at Hilo Medical Center and diagnosed with acute hepatitis. The lawsuit was filed against USPlabs, LLC, the corporation that manufactures OxyElite Pro, and GNC Holdings, Inc., a retailer and distributor of OxyElite Pro. OxyElite Pro Linked to Hepatitis Liver Damage in Hawaii, Lawyers Investigate

At least 24 cases of acute hepatitis in Hawaii have been linked to OxyElite Pro, a dietary supplement, according to a health advisory issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Eleven people diagnosed with acute hepatitis and liver damage in Hawaii have been hospitalized, Two of whom received liver transplants. One person has died. Costco Hepatitis A Lawsuit Filed for Man Sickened by Berry Mix Produced by Townsend Farms

Another lawsuit has been filed in California against Costco Corporation and Townsend Farms on behalf of a victim of a multi-state hepatitis A outbreak.  The source of the outbreak is frozen berries manufactured by Oregon-based Townsend Farms and sold at Costco stores, according to the suit, which is not a class action. The berries were part of a recall. "The evidence pointing to Townsend Farms Organic Antioxidant Blend berries is extremely strong," said attorney Fred Pritzker, who is representing several other victims of the hepatitis A outbreak.
