Laboratorios Jalona SA de CV is voluntarily recalling all lots and all bottle sizes of Jaloma Antiseptic Hand sanitizer because it contains methanol, or wood alcohol, that is not declared on the label. There have not been any reports of adverse reactions related to this recall. The recalled products include Jaloma Antiseptic Hand Sanitizer Ethyl Alcohol 62% With vitamin E, sold in 16.9 fluid ounce bottles. The UPC number on the product is 7 59684 51503 3. Lot number 0005295 expires in April, 2022, and lot number 0006373 expires in May, 2022. Also recalled is Jaloma Antiseptic Hand Sanitizer Ethyl Alcohol 62% With vitamin E, sold in 4 ounce bottles. Four Americans Are Dead After Ingesting Methanol Hand Sanitizers

According to the Centers for Disease Control and PRevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report for the week of August 5, 2020, four Americans are dead after ingesting methanol hand sanitizers. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers should only contain ethanol or isopropanol, but recently, some of them have been found to contain methanol. Methanol, or wood alcohol, is toxic when absorbed through the skin and can kill if ingested. Children can accidentally consume this product, and some adults use ethanol or isopropanol for substitutes for alcohol. Many recalls of these products have been issued in the past few months. FDA Puts Some Hand Sanitizer Manufacturers on Import Alert

The FDA is reiterating its warning about dangerous alcohol-based hand sanitizers that contain undeclared methanol, and is also putting some hand sanitizer manufacturers on import alert. That means that any product those companies try to import into the United States will be stopped and held at the border. The government is also working with these hand sanitizer manufacturers to recall products and is encouraging retailers to remove recalled products from store shelves. The FDA has expanded recalls of some brands of hand sanitizers that may contain methanol, or wood alcohol, that is toxic and can be absorbed through the skin. The sanitizers are labeled as made with ethyl alcohol, but contain methanol. Methanol can be life-threatening if ingested. Children may accidentally drink it, and some adults use it as a substitute for alcohol. The FDA knows of some cases of children and adults suffering blindness, who were hospitalized, and who died after drinking hand sanitizers.
