CFIA Issues Recall of London Dry Gin for High Alcohol Content
The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) has initiated a recall of Bombay Sapphire-brand London Dry Gin following a food safety inspection of the product. According to the Canada Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), this product should be removed from store shelves due to its excessively high alcohol content. The recall arose from an error during production in which one batch of the gin was bottled before it was diluted to its proper 40% alcohol content by volume. Recalled Cheerios, Honey Nut Cheerios Sicken 125
At least 125 people became sick after eating Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios that contained gluten but were labeled as gluten free, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Most of those sickened reported gastro-intestinal problems. The products are safe to eat for anyone who is not gluten intolerant, does not have celiac disease, or is not allergic to wheat. Minneapolis-based General Mills issued a recall for 1.8 million boxes of the cereals on October 5 after discovering the problem. Other varieties of Cheerios are not affected. "We recognize the importance of this issue to people with celiac disease, wheat allergy, and gluten sensitivity, and we will continue to provide updates and advice as needed," the FDA said in statement. North Carolina Seafood Processor Sentenced
Alphin Brothers Inc.,a seafood processor and wholesale distributor in North Carolina, was sentenced this month in federal court for falsely labeling imported shrimp. An employee purchased shrimp on the company's behalf and directed employees to falsely label farm-raised imported shrimp as a wild-caught product of the U.S. This mislabeled product was sold by Alphin Brothers to customers in Louisiana through interstate commerce. The facility was ordered to pay a criminal fine of $100,000 and to forfeit about 21,450 pounds of shrimp. The company will also serve three years of probation. And they must implement a training program to educate employees on federal labeling requirements and laws. Walgreens Pulls Phony Herbal Supplements; Walmart, Target, GNC Keep Selling
After tests showed their store-brand herbal supplements did not to contain the herbs on their labels, Walmart, Walgreens Target and GNC all received cease and desist letters from New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman yesterday. Only Walgreens has responded by pulling the products. Walmart Target and GNC issued statements that they were looking into the matter. While they do, their shoppers cam feel free to shell out $8-$10 on bottles full of sand, allium, pine, wheat/grass, rice mustard, citrus, dracaena (houseplant) or cassava (tropical tree root), but labeled Ginseng, Garlic, St John' Wort or Echinacea.
