Whole Foods Raw Cheese Recalled for Possible Listeria

Whole Foods Market is recalling Trois Comtois Morbier cheese for possible Listeria contamination. The recalled cheese was sold in the Mid Atlantic, Southwest, Northern California, Southern Pacific and Midwest regions. Customers who have purchased this cheese should not eat it. The recalled Trois Comtois Morbier was sold in  11-pound wheels which were then cut and wrapped in varying weights and are labeled with a Whole Foods Market scale label.  Following is the label information for each region. In Arizona,  southern California, Hawaii, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas, and the cheese was labeled "Morbier Raw Milk"  with the PLU 293358. Whole Foods Recalls Vegan and Chicken Salads for Undeclared Allergens

Whole Foods Market is recalling two kinds of bulk curried salad- chicken and vegan, because they may contain undeclared allergens of egg and soy.  Labels for the products were accidentally reversed. The vegan "chick'n" salad contains soy, and the curried chicken salad contains egg. Consumers with egg or soy allergies should not consume these products. No illnesses have been reported in association with this recall. Whole Foods Takes Lead On GMO Labeling

Whole Foods Market has announced that by 2018 all products containing genetically modified ingredients must be labeled so if they are to be sold at its stores in the U.S. and Canada. It is the first American grocery store chain make such a requirement. “We are putting a stake in the ground on GMO labeling to support the consumer’s right to know,” Walter Robb, co-CEO of Whole Foods Market, said in a statement. “The prevalence of GMOs in the U.S. paired with nonexistent mandatory labeling makes it very difficult for retailers to source non-GMO options and for consumers to choose non-GMO products. Whole Foods Recalls More Smoked Salmon For Listeria

For the third time in one week, Whole Foods Market is recalling smoked salmon items for possible Listeria contamination.  The most recent recall is for Circle Sea Salmon Lox Trim sold in Oregon and Washington state stores. They include: cold smoked salmon lox trim -- PLU 97629, Bagel Half with Lox Cream Cheese w/Capers – PLU 92811, Whole Bagel with Lox Cream Cheese with Capers – PLU 98437, and Gravlox Cream Cheese Spread – PLU 95307). Whole Foods Market is expanding its smoked salmon recall for potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes to include an additional lot code. The black and gold, flat, rectangular, vacuum-sealed 4 oz packages of Whole Catch Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon with UPC code 0 99482 40880 0  were sold in 18 states: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Rhode Island Texas, and Utah. The lot codes now included in the recall are 7425A2297A. and 7425A2298B. No illnesses have been reported related to these lot codes. But a sample of the product has tested positive for Listeria. Whole Foods Market  is the latest in a string of companies to announce a salmon recall for possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The product under recall is Whole Catch Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon  in 4 oz packages. It was sold cold smoked and sliced in Whole Foods stores in 12 states: Clorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island, and Utah. The recalled salmon was sold in black-and-gold, flat, rectangular vacuum-sealed packages. The lot code,  ink-jet printed on the the upper left side of the back of the package,  is 7425A2298B. Maker of Cheese Linked to Deadly Listeria Outbreak Put on Import Alert By FDA

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has placed the maker of recalled cheese linked to a deadly Listeria outbreak that has sickened 14 people and killed two on import alert. Cheese made by Fattorie Chiarappa S.R.L.of Conversano, Italy, will be denied admission into the United States unless the company can show, through independent lab testing, that it is not contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Federal officials have identified imported ricotta salata as the source of a Listeria outbreak that has sickened 14 people in 11 states and the District of Columbia. Lawsuit against Whole Foods and Forever Cheese Seeks Money Damages for Listeria Food Poisoning Victim

Attorney Fred Pritzker, a national food safety lawyer, filed the first lawsuit against Forever Cheese, Inc. for listeriosis allegedly caused by Frescolina ricotta salata cheese that had been imported by the company and then sold to Whole Foods Market Group, Inc. According to the complaint filed in the case, Pritzker's client, John McKissick, is one of 14 confirmed cases of listeriosis linked to the cheese. Mr. McKissick allegedly ate several kinds of cheeses purchased at a Whole Foods Market store in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, several days before becoming ill. “Listeriosis is caused by Listeria monocytogenes, a dangerous foodborne pathogen,” explained Pritzker, who represents listeriosis victims nationwide. “Each Listeria outbreak is caused by a genetically unique strain of the bacteria. … [Read more...]

Questions About Whole Foods Market Cheese Recalls

On September 12, 2012, Whole Foods Market recalled Frescolina brand ricotta salata cheese imported by Forever Cheese, Inc. for Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The product was sold in 21 states and Washington, D.C. The cheese was "cut into wedges, packaged in clear plastic wrap, and sold with a Whole Foods Market scale label using PLU 293427," according to the recall notice. The cheese is linked to a nationwide outbreak that has sickened at least 14 people in 11 states. The FDA issued a nationwide recall for the cheese on September 10, 2012. However, Whole Foods has not identified the store or distribution center that cut, repackaged, labeled, and distributed the cheese. Whole Foods Recalls Cheese For Possible Listeria Contamination

Whole Foods is recalling Ricotta Salata cheese that may be contaminated with Listeria moncytogenes.  The cheese has been linked to a Listeria outbreak that has sickened 14 people in 11 states and killed two. The recalled cheese was cut into wedges, wrapped in clear plastic and sold with a Whole Foods Market label with the PLU number 293427.  All wedges with "sell by” dates through Oct. 2 are included in the recall. This cheese has a four-month shelf life. Consumers who have purchased it at any time in recent months should and still have it on hand should not eat it. All 14 of the case patients in this outbreak required hospitalization. Three people died, but for one of them, listeriosis was not considered a contributing factor.
